This exhibition will not focus on the social and political action of Ghent’s Freemasons, but rather on their role in the development of art and culture at the end of the 19th century. The idea behind this exhibition is that this period of progressive societal vision was accompanied by a strong inclination for innovation in art and architecture. To test this hypothesis, the exhibition will explore not only which artists were members of Ghent Freemasonry, but also how members of “Le Septentrion” and “La Liberté” became involved in the organization of cultural life in Ghent, notably through the Academy, the Cercle Artistique et Littéraire, and the Salon Triennal, to promote innovation and contemporary art, offering a chance to young artists, including many women.
Guided tours are offered, as well as in-depth Sunday lectures, guided tours on the theme of Freemasonry in Ghent, temple tours at the Maison Minard, as well as nocturnes and a scientific colloquium.
