Freemasonry in N. Macedonia

In what is now North Macedonia, the masonic lodges were founded in the cities of Bitola and Skopje. In 1909 in Bitola, under the Grant Orient of Italy, the Lodge “Earth and Sun” was formed in 1909, and later closed in 1925. In 1911, in the same city, the Lodge “L' Aurore De La Liberte” was formed.
On the other hand, in Skopje, now the capital of N. Macedonia, the first Lodge as consecrated in 1912, under the Supreme Council of Serbia. Almost all lodges stopped working on the eve of the Second World War. The Grand Lodge of Macedonia was founded in 2005 by the United Grand Lodge of England. The Grand Regular Lodge of North Macedonia was formed in 2023, composed of three symbolic and one research lodge.
Operative Freemasonry has left its sacred imprint on the architectural wonders of our churches and monasteries. The Crafting Guilds of our ancestors roamed the Balkans, adorning the region with grandiose edifices that stand as enduring symbols of skill and devotion.
The journey of our Grand Lodge began in 2016, under the benevolent guidance of the Grand Regular Lodge of Slovenia. In that pivotal year, our Most Worshipful Grand Master and two other brothers were initiated into the Craft at Lodge within the Grand Regular Lodge of Slovenia. This marked the genesis of our sacred work back in our country. Three years later, through perseverance and unwavering dedication, we established our first Deputy Lodge in our homeland. This initial Lodge, aptly named “Sonce” or “SUN,” began humbly with just 23 brothers. Despite the trials posed by global lockdowns and other challenges, we grew steadily under the watchful care of our Slovenian brethren. By last year, our ranks swelled to 77 brothers, enabling us to consecrate three regular Lodges and submit our membership application to CIGLU. Recently, we have further expanded our light by establishing our fourth Lodge, the Research Lodge “Quatuor Coronati”. In November 2025 we expect to number more than 100 brethren and constitute the Supreme Council (of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite) of North Macedonia.
