Visit to Quinta da Regaleira – Sintra

As part of the European Heritage Days, the visit to Quinta da Regaleira was organized by the Association Architecture et Patrimoine Maçonniques AAPM, in close collaboration with the Grande Loja Nacional Portuguesa GLNP and the Associação Cultural Muralha Sapientia ACMS.

The visit took place on 20/09/2026, beginning at 15:00 and ending at 17:30, with 30 participants.

Quinta da Regaleira was built between 1898 and 1912 by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro together with the architect Luigi Manini, creating a world inspired by Neo-Manueline, Gothic, classical and esoteric styles.

Among its many symbolic attractions with esoteric and philosophical-initiatic interpretations are two Initiation Wells: one Perfect and one Imperfect; a Fountain of Abundance (purifying); several interconnected underground tunnels, a Chapel and a remarkable Main Palace, among many other elements filled with meaning and history (niches and statues).

The visit was designed to create an experience of reflection. Visitors were invited to experience, without any interpretative assistance, an intellectual journey in freedom, in the pure sense of the esoteric exploration of the symbolism presented to them. The main points of the visit were the Initiation Wells, the Fountain of Abundance, the Chapel and the Carvalho Monteiro Palace.

This Well symbolizes a descent into the depths of oneself, in the sense of transformation and spiritual rebirth. At 27 metres deep, it has 9 landings on a stone staircase, with alternating niches of different sizes that would represent all the demons, vices and passions we retain, until we reach the base, or our metal, where the eight cardinal directions are represented as the foundation of the choices and paths followed at the basis of our being. The reverse path, from bottom to top, also invites interpretation, as the arduous ascent of the staircase from darkness, obscurity and fears towards Light and wise knowledge.

Network of underground tunnels in the initiatic universe

Imperfect Initiation Well

This symbolic well represents the imperfection in each of us in the inner search and the path still to be completed towards knowledge and the desired spiritual transformation. Yielding to passions and vices, the roughness of the spirit transmitted into Being through matter, Salt, imperfect forms and the shadows present. Our SELF.

Fountain of Abundance

This fountain appears at the end of tunnels originating from the Perfect Initiation Well, symbolizing an alchemical principle of Albedo, in which the purification of the spirit takes place through water, which purifies, fertilizes, brings prosperity and is a source of renewed life. It therefore appears after Nigredo, the previous phase in which darkness and death occurred during the descent into the well. The presence of Alchemy in the initiatic journey.

Chapel of the Holy Trinity and Regaleira Palace (Carvalho Monteiro)

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity combines Christian, Catholic, Templar and esoteric symbolism. Its Neo-Manueline architecture evokes faith, initiation and spiritual quest. An underground staircase connects it to the initiatic universe of the estate. The images depict Saint Anthony of Lisbon, Saint Teresa of Ávila, Jesus Christ at the centre as Christ the Almighty, and two Angels evoking “Glory to God in the Highest”. It is therefore a representation of Jesus Christ as sovereign, judge and ruler of the Universe, in the act of blessing.

Regaleira Palace or Carvalho Monteiro Palace

The residential palace represents the highest splendour of eclectic and revivalist architecture. Dominated by Neo-Manueline style, it incorporates Neo-Gothic, Neo-Renaissance and Romantic elements. Designed by Luigi Manini, it unites revivalist, medieval and classical features, with the parts forming the whole.

This visit would have had no meaning without everyone’s presence, in an atmosphere of pursuit of knowledge, admiration and exaltation of the past in order to build the future in its greater concept of Eternity.

As a picture is worth a thousand words, we end this brief summary of our visit to Quinta da Regaleira with the Fountain of the Portal of the Guardians.

Two ibises refer to Thoth, the Egyptian God associated with wisdom. They protect and represent duality and the guardianship of the underground paths that connect to the Perfect Initiation Well, holding a conch shell whose sound would represent the pronunciation of the
Lost Word. Nevertheless, within the strongly represented alchemical concept of this place, there is a message more directly linked to initiation: Solve et Coagula – the alchemical dissolution to separate, purify and destroy the old form; et coagula, or gather together, to recompose and unite, giving a new form to what has been purified through initiation.

And because this event took place in Portugal, some of the participants ended the day in a pastry shop/manteigaria with a traditional pastel de nata, also accompanied by the Masonic symbolism appropriate to the occasion.
